In about 1927, the Fairbanks Exploration Company built four one-story houses for its management-level employees, across the street from its Fairbanks complex. Hip-roofed with front porches, the wood-framed houses have bungalow characteristics. Numbers 507 and 521 face Illinois Street, with mirror-image plans. Behind 507 is 505, which faces south. Number 523, behind 521, is set at an angle, meant to face a semicircular drive that was never built. Each house has a greenhouse; one four-bay garage serves all of the houses. These four houses of a type, in a planned setting, clearly have a different origin than most houses in Fairbanks. Their role as company housing is clearly expressed in their similar designs.
