Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine

1889–1953. New River Park, south side of Ewart Ave., 1 mile north of intersection with Harper Rd. (WV 3)

This municipally operated exhibition mine, one of coal country's main attractions, has provided Beckley with a motto: “the city with a mine of its own.” Recently, a typical miner's house, superintendent's house, and coal-camp church, all from company towns in Raleigh County, have been re-erected near the mine opening. The West Virginia Youth Museum and Mountain Homestead, featuring a re-created log house, barn, one-room schoolhouse, and, of course, a moonshine still, are adjacent to the exhibition mine.
