H. E. Shadle, a retired Charleston businessman who shared George Washington's birthday, freely interpreted Mount Vernon when he built this house on a portion of his hero's extensive western lands. As a second career, Shadle established a dairy operation on his 1,400-acre tract and shipped milk to Charleston. There he sold it at the Mount Vernon Dairy Building. This structure, now gone, was a far more slavish copy of Mount Vernon than the house. Numerous barns, stables, and silos, all part of Shadle's extensive farm operations, surround the house in a relationship similar to the plantation outbuildings at Mount Vernon. Washington would no doubt have approved.
