The name Tu-Endie-Wei is a misrendering of a Wyandot (not Shawnee) Indian term that means “triangular point of land at the confluence of rivers.” While it well describes the site, it has no validity regarding this particular point and is a twentieth-century appellation. The park was purposely left outside the Point Pleasant floodwall, and here the traditional relationship between land and water remains. With its many associations, this is one of West Virginia's most historic spots.
