A monumental and intriguing Romanesque Revival structure, this former bank is faced with courses of massive, tawny sandstone alternating with narrow, recessed strips of red stone. The arrangement gives a distinct horizontal striation to the composition. First-floor bays have arched openings (many now boarded) framed by voussoirs that repeat the color contrasts of the walls. At the second-story level, an octagonal turret supported on stone brackets and capped with a pyramidal tiled roof boldly emphasizes the street corner. The long Bland Street elevation has three bays capped with tall, pointed pediments, followed by three lesser bays covered with a gable roof. When built, the bank's stern countenance contrasted with lesser frame and brick buildings nearby.
