High Gate Carriage House

1909–1910, Horace Trumbauer. 1991, Paul D. Marshall and Associates. Adjacent to High Gate (east corner of the intersection of Walnut Ave. and 9th St.)

Employing the same materials and basic design as the mansion, this large, H-shaped combination carriage house and servants' quarters is typical of service buildings attached to houses of High Gate's magnitude. It was used as a nursing home for a number of years and was threatened with demolition in 1988. When it became known that a fast-food franchise planned to occupy its site, interest in its preservation galvanized. The Friends of High Gate, Inc., now own the building and use it for exhibitions and receptions.
