Revolutionary War veteran Henry McWhorter built this small, single-pen log house in Hacker's Creek Valley several miles northeast of Jackson's Mill. Constructed when Indian attacks were still a threat, it has few exterior openings. Inside, a narrow stairway connects the single rooms on each floor. In 1925 historian Lucullus McWhorter, a descendant, described and illustrated his family's ancestral home in The Border Settlers of Northwestern Virginia and urged its preservation. Two years later the house was reerected on, or near, the site of Edward Jackson's original log house. It typifies first-settlement houses in central West Virginia.
