This elegant Italianate building’s stone walls, rusticated with deep mortar joints to accentuate each block, provide a strong sense of weight and solidity, as do the stone hoods with prominent keystones capping the second-story windows. The ground-story arcade turns the building’s corner to form a double-arched entrance, a common feature for corner-lot commercial buildings of the time. Hire constructed the building to house the Gust Brothers’ meat market, but soon the Baraboo Savings Bank moved in, and it continued to serve the banking industry until the Great Depression brought a merger with the larger First National Bank.
