c. 1840. 325 Main St., City of Burlington

This brick, one-story Greek temple with Ionic columns and fine ironwork railings sits in eye-catching isolation. It was built facing Main Street to house the law practice of prominent attorney Don Carlos Baxter. Because Baxter's property (c. 1820; 163 S. Willard Street) passed to a series of institutional owners, it was never subdivided. As a result, the mid-nineteenth-century appearance of this small law office and its setting remain intact, similar to the few remaining village law offices in such places as Benson and Westminster.
