The gambrel roof of the Jenckes House is rare in Providence, because few were built in the second half of the eighteenth century, and earlier ones have disappeared (as they have not in Newport). This is probably the largest and most handsomely preserved in the center city. Across Jenckes Street, the rusticated siding on the Barnes House is also rare among extant Providence houses and apparently never was popular here, whereas again the opposite seems to have been true for mid-to-late eighteenth-century Newport.
