This 2,659-acre park that extends into Dinwiddie and Prince George counties commemorates the Siege of Petersburg, the Battle of the Crater, and General Ulysses S. Grant's maneuver around the Confederates' right flank resulting in the retreat of General Robert E. Lee. This meant the loss of Petersburg and Richmond and signaled the beginning of the long march to Appomattox. The park includes original earthworks, battlefield sites, and visitors' centers.
