In addition to a good portion of the stylistic history of collegiate building, the Brown central campus also offers a typological study of the development of library buildings. In the beginning there was a book room in University Hall, succeeded by the room below the chapel in Manning Hall (now a classroom). Next, in succession, are the three buildings in an L-plan cluster just outside the campus fence and a fourth of a block east on Waterman Street.
