Edwin W. Winter House (Gatherem)

c. 1905, Edmund Willson. c. 1930, modified, Edwin Emory Cull. 24 Grinnell Rd. and Atlantic Dr.

The sequence of houses along Warren Point Road ends with an enclave of summer cottages that is likely to be closed by guards in season. At its center is this superbly simple shingle house with a long slope of seaside gable pierced by three double-windowed dormers that seem to scan the sea. Higher up on the roof, two smaller jerkin-roofed dormers peer in a more heavy-lidded manner through the valleys made by those in front. The roof sweeps over the inset porch stretched behind paired columns across the front of the house. The porch makes a platform, raising the house up off its sloping site for a more commanding view. Although Edwin Cull simplified his predecessor's handling in minor ways, this essential statement of the summer cottage is properly Willson's.
