Spruce Street west of S. 2nd Street is a well-preserved mix of two-and-one-half-and three-and-one-half-story houses. Some display the dark glazed headers of the mid-eighteenth century, while others mark the shift toward the uniform red of the Federal style. At number 200 is the Tradesman's Bank, built before 1840 as the Southern Loan Company and one of the handsomest of the Greek Revival buildings of the region (its base is a modern recreation by Henry Magaziner, 1968). Number 220 is the William Arbour house (1743–1745), whose segmental-arched window heads mark it as one of the oldest houses in the area.
