Captain James Abercrombie House
c. 1760. 268–270 S. 2nd St.

This house is remarkable for its height and its finish, making it one of the most impressive of the pre-Revolutionary houses of the city and attesting to the wealth that could be assembled through seafaring. Its first story was largely restored in 1967, replacing a mid-nineteenth-century storefront, but the upper stories, particularly the handsome Tuscan cornice, elaborate dormer surrounds, and balustraded roof, attest to the craftsmanship of the eighteenth century.
