The splendid stonework complete with herringbone-patterned cornerstone inscribed with the date 1829 confirms the German authorship of this handsome church that served the Lutheran and German Reformed congregations. Records suggest that it was intended to be of brick like the sophisticated churches near Lancaster that were based on Robert Smith's Zion Church in Philadelphia (demolished), but stone was suited to the skills of master mason Peter Kester. The Flemish bond pattern of long and short stones in carefully cut and laid courses distinguishes this from the typical rubble stonework of the region. The interior's box pews and raised pulpit were the work of Levi Slutter.
