Joshua Gilpin's 1802 account of his travels through the northern wilderness described the house “resided in by Daniel Stroud (son of the builder) who is very much of a gentleman … [it is] a large three story stone house, four rooms on a floor and very handsomely rough cast.” Its four-room plan with a central hall relates it to the great houses that characterized Pennsylvania from Stenton (
PH152) to the Isaac Meason House near Fallingwater. Skillfully cut stone jack arches are evidence of the sophistication of the mason. It is now the home of the Monroe County Historical Association. To the rear is St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church (9 N. 9th Street), a brick Romanesque Revival design with raised pilasters and corbel table in the German manner. Its cornerstone was laid on July 4, 1868.
