During the 1880s, Price would win fame as the architect of New York's Tuxedo Park, becoming one of the central figures of the Shingle Style. However, his architectural roots were in the High Victorian Gothic, of which this brightly banded and spiky house is his best surviving essay. A large concentration of Price's early buildings can be seen within a few blocks, including the former Ricketts-Reynolds House (1873; 80 S. River Street), now Rifkin Hall, and the A. T. McClintock Block (1874; 71 W. Northampton Street).
