Among the best examples of Wilkes-Barre's changing panorama of styles is this former house, now a dormitory. Built for Edmund Taylor, it was given a Queen Anne face-lift in 1886 for its next owner, Samuel Brown. The various bays, turrets, and porches no more disguise the underlying Greek Revival original than the accessories of Mr. Potato Head disguise the underlying potato. The alteration is the local debut of Albert H. Kipp, who had been a designer for the Cooperative Building Plan Association in New York City, a popular architectural mail-order house. Kipp arrived during Wilkes-Barre's greatest boom and more than any other architect was responsible for the largely Queen Anne character of the city's residential neighborhoods.
