Luzerne County Prison

Luzerne County Prison William E. Fischer, Jr.
1866–1867, John McArthur Jr.; 1981 additions, Grad Partnership. 99 Water St.

The Luzerne County Jail, a massive castellated Gothic structure, continues the tradition established by John Haviland's Eastern State Penitentiary (
PH126). Built of local yellow Campbell's Ledge sandstone, it was enlarged in 1981 with a central towered block that recalls Moyamensing Prison, a work of McArthur's mentor, Thomas Walter. It continues to function in its historic role—much to the dismay of its inmates.
