The two blocks of Broadway are among the richest and best-restored mid-Victorian buildings in the state. Cast-iron pilasters frame commercial windows and enliven the porches of the Inn at Jim Thorpe, adding the crisp detail of the industrial age. All the buildings date after the fire of 1849, and most were erected in the post–Civil War building boom when coal dominated the national economy. Banks, clubs, offices, and the town hotel vie for space with houses, most of which have been restored, many using the aesthetic of California “painted lady” color schemes.
