Named for a Brunswick native who served as governor of Virginia from 1962 to 1966, the two-and-a-half-story, brick courthouse plays on a number of classical themes. Its projecting four-columned central pavilion extends to form an almost standard pedimented Doric portico, although here white columns sit atop brick pedestals so high they seem to be remembering Craftsman porches. The first bay of each of the flanking wings is accented on the roof by a tall square chimney stack, and the two outer bays each have a pedimented dormer piercing the wide entablature. First-story windows are accented by white lintels and sills but the second-floor windows feature blank openings that butt into the entablature. This playful hybrid manages to sit comfortably within its traditional setting.
