When heavy industry began to disappear, a portion of Reading's great mill buildings were adapted as the nation's first outlet mall. These late-nineteenth-century brick mills with the immense windows typified the industrial city from Philadelphia to Allentown and Easton and west to Harrisburg. Few now survive.
