Architect C. H. Sparks designed this pair of buildings, adjacent to and in a bold style complementary to James W. Drum's former courthouse (
IN2). Both are connected to the old courthouse and were included in the NBOC restoration. The twelve-room house facing 6th Street was the county sheriff's residence and offices. The cut-stone quoins, window surrounds, and ornate woodwork are typical of the decoration found on houses of the era, and the addition of pedimented wall dormers creates here an amalgam of Italianate and Colonial Revival elements. The former jail across the courtyard to the west is more severe, and has a rusticated stone base and corner quoins. It retains the bars on its tall and narrow windows, but they have been blocked off from the inside and natural light enters through two large skylights added at the time of the renovations.
