Clarion's Historical Society is located in a Colonial Revival house built for attorney Thomas Sutton that, at its core, dates from 1850. Local architect Elgan Sloan of Shippenville completely remodeled the house for hardware store owner John Ditz in the early twentieth century (see CL5). The facade is dominated by a two-story portico supported on fluted, Ionic columns with a second story balcony in the middle bay. Another two-story porch graces the rear. Flemish bond brickwork and the pseudo-Palladian window in the tympanum continue the elaborate composition. A similar porch and balcony combination can be seen on the New Bethlehem Bank Building, formerly called “White Pillars” (c. 1900; 650 Main Street).
