Probably the oldest surviving building in Clifford, this Georgian house is the clubhouse of the Winton Country Club. The house was built for Joseph Cabell, an officer in the Revolution and an amateur surgeon. In 1779 he sold it to Samuel Meredith and his wife, Jane, Patrick Henry's sister. This single-pile, center-passage house with rear additions has two stories over a raised basement. While the windows of the first story are nine-over-nine, those of the second story are only six-over-six and give the second floor a generous proportion of solids to voids. The classical portico and entablature were added in the early twentieth century, but the beautiful Georgian interiors are intact. The property became a country club in 1967.
