This elegantly embellished Italianate commercial block was built by the Haley sisters, Ellen, Eliza, and Kate, milliners to Manistee's ladies. Having lost five shops to fires between 1871 and 1883, they rebuilt the present block in brick. Next door to their shop, they put up an elaborate three-bay, two-part brick business block and crowned the entire grouping of three storefronts with a single ornamental galvanized-iron cornice. This lacy decorative motif along the cornice, the equally delicate treatment of the wood spandrels beneath, and the carved stone window hood moldings add a touch of femininity appropriate to its enterprising owners.
