The Stuart Neighborhood is named for its most notable resident, Charles A. Stuart, who served as state representative and as U.S. senator. This area prospered following the Civil War and is especially rich in examples of the Queen Anne. The Charles E. Stuart House (1854–1858) at 427 Stuart Avenue is elaborate in detail and imposing in appearance. This symmetrical, cube-shaped Italianate house has a hipped roof with overhanging eaves, ample entablature, and a large but simple belvedere. The central entrance is crowned with a bracketed and arched hood.
