1880. 5 Reading Ave.

This house may be Hillsdale's best example of the Second Empire style in residential architecture. The three-story, irregularly massed Italianate house has numerous bay windows, elaborate wood trim, and it is capped by a mansard roof broken by dormers. Intricate plaster ceiling medallions, butternut floors, and a grand open staircase of walnut decorate the interior. The house was built for Oscar Hancock, a leading Hillsdale grocer.
