Grace Episcopal Church was constructed by a parish organized by the Reverend Darius Barker, formerly of Vermont and New Hampshire. It is a joyous hybrid in style, and as such is typical of numerous rural New England churches of the 1840s. The main body of the church, with its deep entablature, corner pilasters, and rectilinear tower, is Greek Revival and the large double-lancet windows and pointed-arched entrance are Gothic. These two most unlike styles are thus combined with shameless delight. Also reminiscent of New England is the fact that the church faces a village park, a park that was the site of the Hillsdale County Courthouse, later demolished, before the seat of county government was moved to Hillsdale.
