In an expression of civic pride and commemorative spirit, the citizens of Ironwood raised $500,000 through a municipal bond issue to honor local veterans of World War I with this Beaux-Arts classical community building. Bell and Kinports of Minneapolis prepared the plans and Albinson Company built it. The pentagonal, two-story reinforced-concrete and steel building is clothed in whitish-gray terra-cotta and stone and is embellished inside with marble, decorative plaster, murals illustrating mining and logging, and art glass. Windows depicting World War I scenes, including the Battle of Argone, were manufactured by Mosaic Art Glass of Milwaukee in commemoration of community members who served in the war. The building contains a swimming pool, a gymnasium, an auditorium, and municipal offices. It exudes classical refinement and detailing.
