The structure began as a Greek Revival house, but in 1916 it received a Colonial Revival porch with Tuscan columns. Originally constructed as the first rectory for St. John's Episcopal Church on Cedar Lane, it was named in 1862 by the owner at the time, Elizabeth Cocke. The Epees family, owners of Appomattox Manor, purchased it in 1902.
