Seeking an up-to-date fashionable appearance for Saugatuck, Maher (1864–1926), a Chicago architect who summered in Saugatuck, created the classical front for this two-story hotel owned by the Wicks family. Prior to 1898, the hotel served as furniture and grocery stores and apartments.
