Opposite Marriott's Custom House (WF17) is the Board of Trade Building, constructed in 1901 for many of the city's firms that were involved in international trade. Winslow and Bigelow, who designed a number of neoclassical office buildings in the city, created an exterior richly ornamented with classical details in limestone, terra-cotta, and granite. Concerned to maximize natural light and ventilation for its occupants, the architects designed a two-story base supporting three nine-story towers in an H-shaped configuration. The symbols of commerce are provided by the figures of Poseidon and Mercury flanking a globe over the Broad Street entrance. Converted in 1996 for residential use with commercial spaces on the first three levels, Oakwood Corporate Housing now manages the building for short-stay apartment rentals.
