In its first decade of development, the Metropolitan Park Commission primarily hired two architectural firms to embellish the new reservations, Wheelwright and Haven for the design of masonry bridges and Stickney and Austin for park headquarters, bathhouses, convenience stations, stables, and other buildings and shelters. The former Riverside Headquarters for the Charles River Reservation, now leased to a boat rental service, exemplifies the latter's work. The boulder base supports a half-timbered main story with ample porches wrapping around the riverfront of the building. Still a popular boating destination, this area of the Charles originally attracted massive crowds for weekend pleasure boating or the nearby amusements of Norumbega Park, now demolished.
