Informal churches for resort communities became a frequent commission for Boston architects in the nineteenth century. Sunday protestant worship had been an issue for summer residents here from the start of the century. Isaiah Rogers constructed the first church on this site in 1832. After it was damaged in an 1862 storm, Ware and Van Brunt designed a rectangular structure of rubble granite walls topped by a heavy timber frame roof and clerestory windows, along with polychromed mansard roofs. The architects were well known to their Boston clients for the design of the First Church (BB17; 1865) in the Back Bay and for the chapel at the Episcopal Divinity School (BS4) in Cambridge, under construction at the same time.
