The Ruggles Station is one of the hubs of the extended Orange Line, replacing the Washington Street Elevated, built in 1901. From Back Bay to Forest Hills, the eight-station line runs 4.7 miles along a sunken railroad bed across town and parkland. Each MBTA line has a different aesthetic, designed with reference to its surroundings. The Orange Line is high tech, with surfaces that are rough, cold, and hard-edged, denoting a machine age aesthetic. A grand arched tubular framed entrance to the Ruggles Avenue T, at the edge of a large parking area with a covered pedestrian concourse, connects and separates the grounds of Northeastern University from Roxbury to the south.
