Situated at an important junction of several streets and Winthrop Square, the high-rise built in 1988 is an addition to the State Street Trust Building and attempts harmonious coexistence with its handsome late twenties predecessor. Joining the lower eleven stories of the older buff sandstone building (distinguished by relief panels of terra-cotta and bronze), the addition adjusts the general articulation of its massing and fenestration to the old. The richly appointed interior arcade of both sections is adorned with silver and gilt panels and functions as a completely accessible public pedestrian corridor. Here is an exemplary revival of the early Art Deco skyscraper, admirable in proportions, materials, and ornament.
