1993 reconstruction, Leers Weinzapfel Associates. 45 High St.

Viewed from the South Station Transportation Center (FD26), this narrow ten-story structure of granite veneer makes a strong statement. Its cantilevered floors, skeletal balcony, and projecting truss cornice recall the bridges spanning Fort Point Channel. The building serves as the control center for the city's transit system, so the program required a secure building. The architects translated this into an elegant structure, with fine details and different scales. On the High Street entrance facade, the ratio between window and wall is well proportioned, with the windowless surface on the seventh floor housing the dispatch center of the MBTA.
