1974–1975, Thorson-Brom-Breshar-Snyder. Block bound by Park Ave., Commercial, Jefferson, and 4th streets

Brick-sheathed volumes are covered here by a seemingly independent metal-truss roof; the design seems in many ways to be a small-scale version of the earlier McCormick Place (1970) in Chicago designed by C. F. Murphy Associates. The saving quality of the Conway Civic Center is its modest size and its setback from the street, which has allowed some planting of trees. Accompanying the building is that hallmark of midwestern modernity, a metal-and-glass skyway that bridges the street.
