The 236-foot-high steeple of this Gothic Revival church has dominated downtown Dubuque since the late 1860s. In plan the church is an entrance-tower type. Alongside the soaring tower are two chapel-like appendages in a contrasting dollhouse scale. Victorian in its splendor is the upper portion of the tower, with steeply pitched wall dormers and the zigzag pattern on the roof of the spire. The interior is equally rich with carved, painted, and gilded reredos, and wall surfaces painted in maroon and gold.
