A classic, sumptuous example of the Italian villa style in brick, this house boasts all the characteristics one associates with late versions of this form. A square four-story tower with a concave mansard roof sits between two wings of the house. Segmental- or round-arched windows occur throughout the building, each beautifully emphasized by exaggerated stone heads. Missing are a few cast-iron details: the metal balustrade atop the roof and a projecting balcony once situated above the entrance door. If the assumed date of 1870 is correct, it is peculiar that Van Osdel would have produced a house in an earlier style than that of the 1866 Thompson-Ryan house next door.
