The depression of the 1930s encouraged the building of suburban model homes, with the hope that such dwellings would help to revive the building industry. This house, located on one of the curved streets within the suburban section adjoining Crocker Woods Park, was sponsored by the local newspaper, The Des Moines Register and Tribune. Its image was that of the popular English Tudor, realized in this instance in brick, stone, and half-timbering, accompanied by steel-frame casement windows. The essentials of a late twenties or early thirties suburban house are here: a well-worked-out central hall plan, a living room that opens out onto the rear garden terrace, and of course, the essential attached two-car garage.
