Originally a separate hotel, this twenty-one-story, 436-room building is now part of the Sheraton Moana Surfrider, linked through its shared front desk with the Moana Hotel (OA143). Kenji Osano, who already owned the Moana and the Princess Kaiulani (1955; 120 Kaiulani Avenue) hotels, bought the one-acre oceanfront parcel for the bargain price of three million dollars. Sandwiched between the Outrigger and Moana hotels, this building's thin staggered shaft is endowed with angular lanai accentuated by vertical grilles. Its alternating serrated and curvilinear lines, and the interplay of solid and void, light and shadow, result in an intricately coordinated composition. A boldly overhanging cornice caps the building. A remodeling in 1989 added travertine steps, water features, and flagstone paving to the entrance hall.
