Reflective of a time when graciousness and hospitality dominated the visitor industry, the Hawaiiana Hotel presents architect Edwin Bauer's slightly more modern version of the Breakers Hotel. Like its neighbor, this ninety-three-unit, low-rise haven is organized around two lushly planted courtyards, each with its own swimming pool. A single-story, lava-rock-veneered, open-air, lobby pavilion with a koa reception desk sets the tone for the five buildings bordering the courtyards. Standing two and three stories, these structures feature large rooms and suites with upper-level lanai supported by modern, articulated framing, and lower-level louvered walls with transoms. Originally, shōji opened onto the second-floor lanai.
