The Scottish Rite Cathedral was designed for a Christian Scientist church. The Masons purchased the unfinished Greek cross–plan building in 1921 and completed the interior following plans by Ripley, Davis and Fishbourne. A rare example of Classical Revival in Honolulu, the three-story, yellow brick lodge hall is an imposing, but incongruous, addition to the predominantly residential Makiki district. Its projecting facade has double-height brick pilasters and stuccoed columns, and their Composite capitals feature a red Scottish cross on a shield between the volutes.
