With its commanding, stepped false front, the two-story Takata store anchors one end of Hawi's main street. Decorative bracketing along the cornice line and cavetto-framed second-story windows place this double-wall building above the ordinary. This building was constructed by the Harada family and served as a hotel. In 1926, the Takatas purchased and converted it into a grocery and dry goods store, which remained in business until 1991. At the other end of town, the Laoag City Apartments building, of unknown date, exceeds the vernacular norm in its centered, gable-roofed loggia with a diamond-patterned balustrade. The bracketed cornice line and the pent-roof awning sheltering the ground-floor shops add horizontality.
