Founded in Wilmington in 1813, the bank built a neoclassical building on this site in 1836. It was remodeled in 1889 and finally replaced by the current one, for which the Wilmington architect made extensive use of white marble in a Roman Revival composition. Behind a massive portico of coupled Doric columns and pediment, walls of Flemish bond add a note of Colonial Revival. As neighborhood revitalization got underway around 2000, the structure was refurbished to house the Delaware State Bar Association.
