1847. Kennett Pike (DE 52), west of intersection with Center Meeting Rd.

The J. L. Carpenter family, grown wealthy in the mutton-butchering business, built the bracketed Italianate mansion they called Riverview and raised twelve children there. The ornamental cast-iron veranda is one of Delaware's finest examples of antebellum metalwork. From the cupola, Carpenter could survey his 192 acres, which have subsequently been subdivided.
