Isaac Irwin built this handsome house immediately after the Wheeling Suspension Bridge opened. Now among the oldest structures on Wheeling Island, it represents the caliber of initial development in the city's first suburb. The one-and-one-half-story brick house displays impeccable Greek Revival credentials with its pedimented Doric portico (almost a miniature Doric temple) and pedimented dormers. To either side of the five-bay central block are recessed, one-story, one-bay wings. The house, deceptively modest in size, contains a double-pile arrangement of rooms in the central block. The hall contains a notable and unusual hanging spiral staircase.
